OVER 4.5m Ugandans have got mobile phones, the dean of the Makerere University Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology have revealed.

Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba said: "I got the statistics from the Republic Of Uganda Communications Committee in September 2007.

"The figure must be higher because some people ain two phones. This is good because it will assist in preparation people in Information and Computer Technology (ICT)," he noted.

Celtel Republic Of Republic Of Republic Of Uganda introduced mobile telephones in the state in 1995.

Baryamureeba projected that with a broad telephone insurance and computing machine installations, one-half of Uganda's population would have got received ICT preparation by 2010.

Today, Uganda's population stand ups at 28.5m people.

The professor made the comments at the closing of a one-week ICT workshop on Open Mobile River Electronic Vaccine Trials (OMEVAC) at Metropole Hotel in Kampala.

OMEVAC is a undertaking aimed at improving the quality of vaccine trials in low-resource settings.

Through the project, generic information for vaccine trials will be collected.

Baryamureeba said they were developing software system that would enable Ugandans achieve computing machine preparation through assorted avenues.

"People will be able to utilize computing machines and telephones with computing machine installations to acquire ICT training," he said.

Baryamureeba said the instruction and telecommunication sectors would be the first to profit from the software.
